Analysis

On January 14, 2011, about 1600 eastern standard time, a Bell 206B III, Jamaican registration 6Y-JCA, operated by Captain's Aviation Services Limited, was substantially damaged during a forced landing in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The pilot and two passengers were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight that departed Kingston Jamaica, destined for the Rooms Hotel in Ocho Rios.

According to information obtained from an official with the Government of Jamaica, the helicopter was on short final approach to the Rooms Hotel, about 50 feet above ground level, when it experienced a total loss of engine power. The pilot performed an autorotation to a grass area on hotel property; however, the helicopter slid on the grass and struck a coconut tree. The helicopter sustained damaged to the nose section, both main rotor blades, and the skid.

The helicopter was equipped with a Rolls Royce (Allison) 250-C20B engine. The engine compressor was retained for further examination.
