Analysis

On July 9, 2012, at 1700 UTC, a Cessna 208, Brazilian registration PT-OQR, was substantially damaged when it collided with a parachutist during a local skydiving flight from Boituva Airport (SDOI), Boituva Municipality, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The parachutist sustained fatal injuries during the collision. The pilot was not injured; however, the other two parachutists sustained serious injuries.

According to preliminary information from the government of Brazil, the aircraft was performing its tenth skydiving flight of the day, when the accident occurred. The airplane climbed to an altitude of 14,000 feet, and three parachutists jumped from the airplane. One of the parachutists intended to film the other two parachutists during the jump. About 10 seconds after the jump, the airplane initiated a descent to rejoin the traffic pattern for landing. During the descent, the filming parachutist collided with the airplane's left wing, and then the other two parachutists. The filming parachutist received fatal injuries and the other two parachutists landed safely, although they sustained injuries to their lower limbs. The airplane also landed safely; however, substantial damage was incurred to the left wing.
