Analysis

The pilot told a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector that he departed Columbus Municipal Airport (KOLU), Columbus, Nebraska, and flew to Stuart-Atkinson Municipal Airport (8V2), Atkinson, Nebraska; then to Rock County Airport (KRBE), Bassett, Nebraska; then to Springview Municipal Airport (9V1), Springview, Nebraska. The pilot told the inspector that he landed on runway 31 (2,200 feet x 200 feet, turf). The wind was 260 degrees at 11 knots, gusting to 16 knots. The pilot said the landing was "not good." The airplane ground looped to the right and nosed over. Both wing tips were damaged, the left wing lift strut was buckled, and the left main landing gear attach point was wrinkled. The pilot fractured his ankle in the process of extricating himself from the airplane.

According to the FAA inspector, he checked with the Nebraska State Department of Aeronautics and discovered 9V1 was no longer a state recognized airport and is not identified on current aeronautical sectional charts or in airport directories. About 7 to 8 years ago, the owners didn't renew their state license and/or and the airport did not pass a state inspection. According to the pilot, however, he leases the airport from the Village of Springview for one dollar per year and maintains the grass strip.
