The Ranger 2000's Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5C engine represented proven technology adapted for military training use. This turbofan, producing 14.2 kilonewtons of thrust, belonged to a family of engines that had accumulated extensive service hours in civilian business jets. The engine's reliability record in high-temperature operations made it suitable for intensive military training schedules.
With a gross weight of 7,900 pounds and wing area of 167.4 square feet, the aircraft achieved a balance between performance and economy. The straight wing design optimized handling characteristics for student pilots while maintaining sufficient speed for advanced training maneuvers. Maximum range reached 350 nautical miles with internal fuel capacity of 190 liters.
Competition Outcome and Program End
The JPATS competition ultimately favored the Pilatus PC-9 variant, which entered U.S. service as the T-6 Texan II. This Swiss-designed turboprop trainer offered lower operating costs and simpler maintenance compared to the jet-powered Ranger 2000. The selection reflected changing military training philosophies that emphasized cost-effectiveness over raw performance.
Rockwell's defeat in the JPATS competition coincided with broader corporate restructuring. The company's aerospace and defense divisions underwent major changes in 1996, with various subsidiaries sold or merged. The Collins Avionics division eventually became part of RTX Corporation through a series of acquisitions completed in 2020.
Legacy and Historical Significance
No Ranger 2000 aircraft remain in flying condition today. The program's brief existence from 1993 to 1994 left minimal physical legacy, though the aircraft earned its place in aviation databases with ICAO designation LR2T. The first prototype was shipped to Rockwell facilities in the United States for continued evaluation, but no records indicate preservation in museums or private collections.
