The Hawker Heron was a single-seat fighter prototype developed by Hawker Aircraft in the United Kingdom. Designed by Sydney Camm, the company's chief designer, the Heron is historically significant as the first fighter produced by Hawker to utilize a primarily metal structure. This represented a major departure from the wood-heavy construction methods the company had employed in previous designs.

Originally conceived as a private-venture evolution of the Hawker Woodcock, the Heron's design matured into an entirely new aircraft due to the implementation of its metal framework. This shift in materials reflected a broader transition within Hawker's engineering philosophy toward the mixed and metal structures that would characterize their later, more famous fighter aircraft. The prototype program took place between 1924 and 1925, culminating in the aircraft's first flight in 1925, which was piloted by P.S.W. Bulman.

Technically, the Heron was powered by a Bristol Jupiter VI piston radial engine, which delivered 455 hp (339 kW). The aircraft featured a wingspan of 31 ft 10 in (9.70 m), a length of 22 ft 3 in (6.78 m), and a height of 9 ft 9 in (2.97 m). Its wing area was 291 sq ft (27.0 m²). In terms of weight, the prototype had an empty weight of 2,120 lb (962 kg) and a gross weight of 3,126 lb (1,418 kg). For combat capability, the aircraft was designed with provisions for two .303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers machine guns.

Performance tests indicated a maximum speed of 156 mph (251 km/h; 136 kn) achieved at an altitude of 9,800 ft (3,000 m). The aircraft demonstrated a climb rate of 10,000 ft (3,000 m) in 5 minutes and 30 seconds, with a service ceiling of 23,200 ft (7,100 m). It carried 60 imperial gallons (270 L) of fuel, providing an endurance of 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Despite these technical capabilities, the Heron never entered series production. Only one prototype was ever built, and because the Air Ministry expressed little interest in the design, the aircraft saw no operational military or civil service. While no surviving airframes or museum examples are documented, the Heron remains a vital link in the evolution of Sydney Camm's designs and the modernization of British fighter construction during the interwar period.
